‘Art Box’ Studios is a speculative competition project for the GBD Art District, Beijing, China, designed in association with joint winner of the 36sqm Challenge, Tsai Design Studio. The project is an extension of our research into compact and adaptable spaces.
It is a modular unit designed for artists residing in the district, combined with living, studio and gallery spaces. This mixed-use arrangement empowers the artists to be self-sustainable through managing their own galleries, and the studio space would allow visitors direct visual contact into the creative universe of the artist.
The developer’s requirement calls for 200 of these 500m3 Art Studios to be built on the old derelict industrial factory site on the East of Beijing, aiming to revive the area into a cultural hub.
